-- for the schooner of that name which brought John Murray to these shores, and the way we approach our efforts and presence at Murray Grove -

Rudy was the one who resisted fiercely the closing down of Murray Grove when it seemed the best thing to do to some of us"

The Book of Remembrance:

A Murray Grove Treasure

The "Book of Remembrance" is hand calligraphed and filled with original art, history and poetry a true illuminated manuscript of the modern day. Former Murray Grove president George A. Friedrich created it in the 1940s and 50s. (Friedrich was such a guiding light for Murray Grove that one of the guest houses was named for him after his passing.)

The sheer visual beauty of the book is striking. To start with, there are the miniature watercolors. Many are the pages to which lovely scenes, primarily landscapes, are attached twentyfive all together Hand painted borders and random flowers, columns and abstract designs adorn the pages as well.

The entire volume is carefully and lovingly inscribed in a calligraphic hand, down to the subscription lists. Capitals to start off paragraphs and lines are designed and enlarged, on elaborately ornamented backgrounds. The simplest entry is a work of beauty.

Whole sections cover each of the many phases of Murray Grove's history, as well as its historic buildings, with photographs in many cases. Now lost documents have been transcribed. Commentary is often included at times strongly opinionated. The passing offriends and loved ones is touchingly noted. Then mundane, but now valuable lists of members, donors and subscribers are recorded. Finally, verses of poetry, original and not, as well as hymns and songs, fill page after page.
